1477 Pte Thomas Smith was born at Kilmarnock in Ayrshire c1855 .
A groom by occupation he joined 35th brigade at Jersey.
He was then transferred to dcli .
He was tried twice and convicted by courtmartial once for language to a superior officer and once for assaulting an inhabitant .
Thomas served 3 years 150 days in Egypt during the egypt 1882 and the nile campaign 1884 -85 .
He suffered from various ailments inc gonorrhoea, a head wound , syphilis, enteric fever , diarrhoea and colic .
