Charles was born 30th December 1882 at Alverstone, Gosport Hampshire. He joined the Royal Navy 30th December 1900 on his birthday. He was killed in action when HMS Good Hope was sunk during the Battle Of Coronel and is listed as DD discharged dead 1st November 1914. A very early Royal Navy casualty
