A Mercantile Marine Medal on original ribbon named to James Meakin

James was a fireman on SS (HMT) Royal Edward. He was presumed drowned on Friday the 13th August 1915 when the Royal Edward was sunk, his NOK given as Mrs Meakin of 7 Lincoln St Bootle Lancs


The SS Royal Edward, on 28th July she embarked 1367 officers and men at Avonmouth the majority of which were reinforcements for British 29th Inf Division and also RAMC all heading for the Gallipoli Campaign. She was torpedoed by the German submarine UB14, 6 nautical miles off the island of  Kandelioussa, she was struck in the stern and sank within six minutes the times newspaper reported on a released Admiralty casualty list naming 13 officers and 851 troops believed drowned including posthumous VC recipient Cuthbert Bromley
