Joseph was born in Lambeth, London in 1872. He attested aged 18 in 1890 and joined the 4th Battalion. He is recorded as living at 42 Douglas Street, Kent. He served in Malta, India and South Africa.

In India he served with the Malakand Field Force in 1897. In 1897, the Mohmand tribe rose in rebellion and besieged the British garrison in their fortified encampments in the Malakand region. This is sometimes referred to as the Tirah Expedition.

He served in the Buner district in 1898 and went to South Africa in 1900-1902.

He earned the India General Service Medal 1895 with Punjab Frontier 97-98 clasp as well as the Queens SAouth Africa Medal with the clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal.

He was discharged in August 1902.

Medal is on original silk ribbon.
