The Normandy Campaign Commemorative Medal:

The Normandy Veterans Association commissioned, some year ago, Award Productions Ltd to sponsor the production of a medal as a tribute to those who took part in the famous Normandy Campaign of World War II. The medal is available exclusively to veterans of the campaign or their next of kin. This medal is struck in bright cupro-nickel by the Royal Mint to the same
high standard as other military medals and decorations for which they are internationally renowned. Each medal, which is the standard 36mm diameter, will be individually numbered on the edge.

Obverse:
The combined services operation is represented by the flying eagle of the air force, the fouled anchor of the navy, and the bayonet of the land forces.
These symbols are placed over a background of the two lions gardant from the arms of Normandy. The contribution of the United States Forces is signified by a ring of 13 stars, representing the original states, which also form part of the coat of arms of the US Army.
Featured also are code words from the verse by Verlaine as broadcast by the British Broadcasting Corporation to signal the commencement of the operation at 2115 hours on 5 June 1944, “Blessent mon coeur d’une langueur monotone” (soothe my heart with dull languor).

Reverse:
A tank landing craft is depicted with it’s ramp on the beaches of France, symbolized by the fleur-de-lis. The official dates of the campaign (June 6 -August 20, 1944) appear on the extended ramp of the craft. The words NORMANDY CAMPAIGN proclaim the message of the medal. The word NORMANDY also appears on the bar which is attached to the ribbon.

Ribbon:
The 32mm wide woven ribbon comprises the red, dark blue and light blue colours of the 1939-45 Star, arranged differently. The center 12mm in flame red represents the army which was carried on the mission by the navy – represented by two 5mm bands of deep navy blue. These bands are in turn bounded by equal (5mm) bands of blue-grey representing overall protection
of the invasion by the air forces.
Qualified members, or next of kin of qualified members, of the United States Forces who participated in the operation are eligible for this medal.
