James was born c1859 at st lukes , Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.
A bricklayer by occupation he joined the Royal Artillery on 29th August 1879 aged 19 years 10 months .
He served initially at home then over a year in India after another short spell at home he served over 3 years I egypt then another near 2 years in India before a final period at home .
He was was discharged at end of 1st period of service 16th August 1891 .
He suffered 3 periods in hospital. Abroad with gonorrhoea .
