Thomas was born in July 1889 in Leicester and was a motoer cycle tyre builder when he enlisted in January 1917.

He served aboard HMS Agincourt in the closing stages of WW1 and on her, provided cover for the Scandanavian convoys. Also, as a part of the 2nd Battle Squadron, he was present at the surrender of the High Seas fleet in November 1918.
