Joseph was born in the Wavertree Parish of Liverpool in 1891 to Joseph and Francis Stephenson. His address prior to enlisting was 198 Rathbone Road, Old Swan, Liverpool.

He served with the 295th Brigade (TA) Royal Artillery from December 1915 until Auguat 1918. A wound report for him is found dated 17/10/1017. We know from research he suffered gunshot/shrapnel wounds to his shoulders.

A quick look for him in later life and we find only one Joseph Stephenson in Liverpool in 1939. He is living at 4 Gourley Road and working as a warehouseman in a biscuit factory.

He is married to Minne.
