Correctly named to 36541 Pte  W Ackroyd Northd Fus. Walter was born in 1894,

Walter is entitled to a pair and he served with the 1/6th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He enlisted in January 1917 in Halifax. He went overseas to France in April 1917.

He was reported missing and wounded in April 1918 and records show him as a POW in Aus Dem Felde Camp from June 1918. The 1/6th Bn had been involved in action near to  Poeuilly from the 22nd of March and battle raged for at least 10 days, War Diaries are inconclusive for the time as so many men were captured or killed, even the CO and Intelligence Officer. The Battalion were left with just one officer.

This is the period of Operation Michael, the German Spring Offensive.

He was repatriated in January 1919.

He lived with his wife, Elizabeth at 12 Binns St, Bowling, Bradford.

He was later to have his left thumb amputated but it is stated that war service was not responsible.
