John was born in 1881 in St Anns, Cork. He first enlisted into the army in 1902. He served with the 3/10th Royal Fusiliers Militia. His first period of engagement expired in February 1914. He remained at home for his entire service.

His mothers address is given as 4 Jaol Road, Sundays Well, Cork.

He re-enlisted at Tralee, County Kerry on the 22nd of May 1914 and was sent overseas to France on the 15th of August 1914 earning himself a 1914 Star with clasp and rose.

His first RE service number would put him with either the 2nd, 26th or 59th Field Company.
