A nice grouping of unnamed WWII medals awarded to Doctor John Dudley Harte. The Volunteer Medical Services medal is named Dr John D Harte MB BS MRCS LRCP.
Born in 1916 in Pollockshields in Glasgow to James and Marion John was to marry Christine Marion Chesters, a professional dancer in 1942.
He was commissioned in 1940 from the 142nd Officer Cadet Training Unit into the Royal Engineers, later becoming a Captain.
General practitioner Bedford 1954-79, died 16 January 2004; HM coroner for Bedfordshire.
John Dudley Harte studied medicine after wartime service in the Royal Engineers. Before the second world war he had been an insurance claims assessor, and this gave him particular interests in occupational health and also in the relationship between law and medicine. After a number of occupational health appointments he was awarded a research grant to set up a pioneering occupational health department for staff at Bedford Hospital—the first such service, which provided a model for others in the United Kingdom. In 1960 he became an assistant deputy coroner for Bedfordshire and on retiring from general practice and his occupational health appointments he was HM coroner for Bedfordshire. He leaves a wife, Christine, and four children.
He was awarded the Territorial Efficiency Medal which is sadly missing.
All the medals have been court mounted on card for display.
