Richard Reynolds rathbone was an old Etonian who left eton college in 1910 .
He served with the 1st 6th battalion Kings Liverpool Regiment.
Awarded the Military cross lg 26th February 1917 citation reads ” lt Richard reynolds rathbone l,pool r for conspicuous gallantry in action although wounded,he lead a successful raid against enemy trenches with great courage and ability. later he rescued several wounded men under heavy fire “.
Citation for bar to mc ” captain Richard Reynolds rathbone mc 1/6 bn l,pool r (tf). for conspicuous gallantry and initiative at the attack on the la bassee estaires Road on 25th -26th September 1918 ,he was In command of the left attacking company ,and was instrumental in furnishing timely information which was obtained by personal reconnaissance at great personal risk later he rendered excellent service in the counter attack on pioneer dump ” lg 1st February 1919 .
The west Sussex County times 26th October 1962 noting the secretary of Pulborough Labour Party and member of Pulborough parish Council Mr Richard Reynolds rathbone of the elms ,rectory Lane died in worthing hospital on Friday, an old etonian and solicitor he lived in Pulborough for 23 years aged 71 years ,he had studied engineering at Cambridge University and physics at Birmingham, he was wounded twice and recieving an mc and bar in 1st World War and a leading fireman in ww2 heading the national fire service in Pulborough.
