Researching 17978 Singh we do indeed find two London Gazette entries for him in 1945 for Italy.

A story too rarely acknowledged is that of Indian soldiers who fought for the freedom of Europe during World War II. Around 50,000 South Asian troops fought in Italy during the second World War out of which 5773 British Indian soldiers died for the liberation of Italy where majority of them were Sikhs soldiers who played a crucial role in resisting fascism and restoring freedom. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission estimates that 370 Sikh Soldiers died at Forli. The soldiers also fought in other parts of Italy like Cassino, Florence, Ravana, Montone, Sangro River, and among others from 1943-1945. Other memorials such as that of Sangro River commemorates 517 Indian soldiers who laid their lives in 1943-1944 out of which 237 servicemen were Sikh whereas the memorial in Cassino accounts for 1438 Indian soldiers out of which 377 were Sikh.
