The attack on the 21st of March began at 4am with a bombardment of both explosives and gas. The 7th Bn were defending the area near Jussy Canal with the 8th Bn in support.

The 7th had lost all contact with the 8th 8th and were ordered to withdraw as almost surrounded in a position to the rear of Flavy Le Martel. They did counter attack to help repel the German advance.

This was the start of a week long battle.

Arthur was captured at the canal un-injured .
