Correctly named 7636 Pte JM Eckermann York R

John Middleton Eckermann was born in West Hartlepool in 1885 to Philip and Mary.

Johns grandfather, Matthew Eckermann was born in 1826 in Nieder Rastenberg, North Germany. We know he was in Hartlepool by 1849 as Johns Auntie was born there.

In 1901, we find the family at 4 Leeds Street in West Hartlepool.

He first joined up in 1903 when he enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry with the service number 5894. He served until 1909 and discharged as time served. His address then is given as 9 St Thomas Street, West Hartlepool.

He married Violet Jane Turtle in 1914.

It is unknown when John re-enlisted but does go to France with the Green Howards in September 1915.

He served mainly with the 1/4th Battalion but also served with the 6th, 8th and 10th. He was re-numbered 203046 within the Yorkshire Regiment.

He rose to the rank of Lance Sergeant by 1919 and transferred to the Army Reserve.

He is recorded in the Police Gazette in Stafford where he is held in custody on the 17th of June 1921. Charged with Larceny and living off the earnings from prostitution.

John died in 1952.

Alas, no sign of his Victory.

The medals have modern silk ribbons.
