He was commander of the city of tientsin during admiral Seymours famous advance in 1900 .
Comes with his commission documents and certificates inc one signed by admiral of the fleet John Fisher when he was captain of hms excellent.
There is also his original medal ribbons many photos I’m uniform and other interesting documents, he was a friend of Rudyard kipling and attended naval college with the future king George v who awarded him with a presentation sword whist Prince of Wales.
He died not long after the boxer rebellion and future president of usa Herbert hoover then a mining engineer wrote a rather scathing account of his command of tientsin which was published in colliers magazine and was refuted by one of his sons .
