He enlisted into the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1891. James was UK based for the entirety of his service. He was discharged after his second term of engagement in 1912. His address upon discharge was 17 St Johns St in the St Giles area of Oxford. It is noted that his trade is a bookseller.

He re-applies for service with the Royal Berkshires in 1914 and is given the service number 10476. By 1915 he had risen to the rank of Acting Sergeant. He only served in the UK and became a Z Class reservist in 1919. He would have been entitled to a British War Medal.
