The 4th and 5th Battalions (TA) were part of the ill-fated 18th Division. The Division, comprising mostly of Territorials from the eastern counties, left for the Middle East in October 1941, was diverted to Singapore when Japan entered the war, and on the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 spent three and a half years as Far East Prisoners of War, many being involved in the construction of the infamous Burma – Thailand Railway.

Private Frederick John Bearman was killed during the fighting at the fall of Singapore where the Japanese captured the British stronghold of Singapore.

The medals are in good condition and come with the condolence slip.
