James William was born in Sunderland in 1898 to Abraham and Margaret.
In 1911, we find the family living at 20 Mount Road in Sunderland.
James enlisted into the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 and served there as a clerk, the same profession held upon enlistment. His service number was 62378.
He was later to enlist into the Royal Artillery (TA) in February 1928.
He married Catherine Mitchell in 1930.
In 1939, we find him living at 11 Honister Drive in Sunderland and was working as a gas company clerk. We know at that time he was with the 178th Battery RA as Battery Quarter Master Sergeant.
He was entitled to his TEM in 1940 whilst with Coastal Defence and Anti Aircraft Branch.
His clasp was awarded in 1944 whilst he was with the Heavy Anti Artillery.
He died in 1971.
The medal has its original silk ribbon.
