William rice a labourer by occupation was born c 1874 at Whitehaven in Cumberland.
He enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers 27th August 1892.
He served in the sudan campaign in 1898 being awarded the queens sudan medal and khedives with Khartoum clasp whereabouts unknown, also took part in occupation of crete .
He was awarded 14 days imprisonment with hard labour 31st October 1901 by Co for breaking out of camp .
He was discharged 26th August 1904 .
