William Charles Francis was born in Goytre, Monmouthshire on 15th August 1872. On 9th August 1893 William enlisted at Cardiff for the Welsh Regiment, stating previous service with the 3rd Welsh. Promoted Lance Corporal on 28th August 1895, only to be reduced again to Private on 12th September for misconduct. He was granted Good Conduct pay on 9th August 1899. On 4th November 1899 William arrived in South Africa. Discharged from Army in Dec 1902
