Correctly named 8733 Spr W Heffernan TBRE

William was born in Blarney, Cork in 1878 and we know he lived with his mother Catherine in Summerstown in Cork, Southern Ireland.

He was a civilian telegrapher prior to enlisting in April 1900.

He served in South Africa from May 1901 until August 1902 when he was discharged as time served.

There are a number of William Heffernan’s and Hefferman’s from the South of Ireland with WWI service but we have been unable to ascertain for sure if any will be ‘our chap’

An interesting project to a hard to find unit of the Royal Engineers that really does need further research.

This medal arrived to us in a very poor state in pieces and was sent to be professionally ‘rebuilt’. It needed its clasps remounted as medal as the suspender. The clasps earned are South Africa 1901 & 1902, Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony and confirmed on rolls.

It has a length of original silk ribbon.
