Enlisting one day before the Battalion was formed on the 28th of August 1914, he is noted in the ‘Hull Commercials’ as one of the very first to list.

He was sent to Theatre 3, Egypt in December 1915 earning himself a 1915 Star Trio.

They were later sent to France and served on the Somme.

James was wounded in May 1918 and notes indicate his next of kin living in Maidstone.

he was discharged in May 1919.
