William joined on 9th September 1914 .

He served with the 112th company machine gun corp.

The 112th were part of the 112th brigade, 37th division from 4th March 1916 taking part I some notable actions inc battle of ancre, 1st battle of the Scarpe, battle of arleux , capture of monchy le preux & the 3rd battle of Ypres ( Passchendaele) the latter action probably being where William was seriously wounded on 6th October 1917 ( report date 6th November).gunshot wound to right humerus ( compound fracture) He was evacuated to charing cross hospital on board the hospital ship Peter de cornice, undergoing 184 days treatment .

He was discharged due to wounds 19th December 1918 .
