A very interesting group of 5 individually brooch mounted in frame .

British War and Victory Medals named 2 lieut a w wyncoll raf .

defence , War and 1937 coronation Medals unnamed as issued.

Austen Wrench wyncoll was born Buckfastleigh In Devon 19th April 1895 .

Educated at Elstow school in Kempston.

Went to Victoria University in Manchester September 1913 as a medical student.

Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Kings Own Royal Lancaster regiment he entered France 21st May 1916 .

Transferred to the royal flying corp 22nd February 1918 .

Returned to UK He trained as an observer at Eastchurch before being posted to 108 squadron on 18th July 1918 when the squadron was posted to capelle , dunkirk .

They were equipped with 2 seater dh9 bombers and flew raids over Belgium.

Wyncoll was acting as observer for capt Robert Ingrams on a raid over Bruges after successfully completing their mission they were shot down by anti aircraft fire over Ostend.

Being made prisoner of war they were taken to rastatt and then baden pow camps , he was released and returned to UK I December 1918 following the Armistice.

On 29th July 1919 he was returned to Royal Lancaster regt .

He was serving with them in Rangoon when he recived his medals .

Returned to UK wyncoll carried the Regimental colour when the 1st Battalion was inspected by Earl haig before the unveiling of the Westfield war memorial .

Promoted Captain April 1925 he was serving as a company commander when involved in a court martial in 1931 of a private prickler who struck him in the face (see photo of the newspaper article ).

In 1935 he was himself in court being fined for driving without due care and attention .

Promoted Major 1st August 1938 he retired in June 1939 however with war declared later that year he was recalled and saw home service with the Royal Lancasters retiring again in August 1945 .

He was the field master of the aldershot beagles in the 1950s .

A note on the rear of the frame states he was a distant cousin on Jane Austen hence his unusual 1st name .
