Sydney was born to Robert and Elizabeth in 1894.

In 1911, he was living at 42 Railway Terrave, Brotton, Yorkshire and working as an ironstone miner.

He served with the 4th Battalion and went overseas to France in early November 1915 earning himself the 1915 Star Trio.

We find a wound report for him dated 16/9/1916 and information tells us he suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg. He was with Y Company and was at that time serving at the Battle of Fleurs Courcelettes.Another wound report is dated 27/10/1916 but yields no information.

He went missing during the German Advance on the Aisne in May 1918 and records show him to have been captured at Croanne.
