John Richard Rootham was born to Henry & Keziah in 1896 in Kettering, Northampton.

He enlists into Anson Battalion, Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in August 1915. We see in February 1916 he has transferred to the 3rd Reserve Battalion at Blandford. He is seen to land in Stavros on the 25th of February 1916 with Anson Battalion as is recorded as being a machine gunner.

He was wounded by a bomb in the chest and shoulder in June 1916 whilst now serving in France and subsequently returned to England and discharged in August 1916 with the Silver War Badge numbered 1832 (not present). It is noted that he suffered with epilepsy. He served with Anson Battalion from 17/2/1916 until 17/7/1916

He married Mary Martha Elizabeth Bailey in 1920.

John died in 1949.

We were lucky to find a photo of John as a child whilst undertaking research.
