He enlisted in to the Royal Navy Air Service with the service number F27048 in March 1917.

He was transferred into the Royal Air Force upon its organisation in 1918 and he was posted to serve with 17 Squadron.

17 Squadron had BE 12 aircraft at the time and Sydney was employed as an air mechanic. 17 Squadron served in France and later they became a tactical reconnaissance squadron based in the Middle East and Bulgaria.

Sydney never made it with his squadron out of France due to a gunshot wounding to his head while he was still in Boulogne in August 1918.

In 1939, Sydney is recorded as a business owner working as an electrical engineer and photographer.
