Frederick Bullas was born in 1883 and enlisted for service in Sheffield in September 1914, most likely with the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion.

He was sent overseas to France in January 1915 earning himself the 1915 Star Trio. He was then serving with the 6th Battalion.

He was wounded by shrapnel in June 1915 to the left shoulder. He was to spend 47 days in hospital before shipping out to Gallipoli. He was then to contract malaria whilst in Gallipoli and was most likely evacuated to Egypt with the remainder of the Battalion in the following January.

After the 6th Bn returned to the UK from Egypt, they were sent back to France. Whilst serving in France in the October of 1916, Frederick was shot in the chest, a wounding that put him back into hospital, this time for 24 days.

He served also with the 13th Battalion Lincolns but then transferred to the 36th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers with the service number 55022 in July 1917. By the October of the same year, he had transferred to the 543rd Agricultural Company of the Labour corps with a new service number 456006.

He was compulsorary transferred in January 1919 to the Royal Engineers, a new service number WR-285403.

He was discharged in May 1919.

The medal has a modern replacement ribbon.
