Correctly named 4047 Pte WG Wood HAC INF
William Gilbert was born to John and Elizabeth in Bethnal Green London in 1889.
In 1911, we find him living at 42 Tredegar Road, Bow in London where he working as an assistant buyer.
He enlisted in January 1915 whilst still living at Tredegar Road but his papers tell us he was a drapery buyer.
He went to France in January 1916 earning himself a WWI Pair. He was to remain in France until April 1919.
He did marry Lucy Anna Hales in 1917.
On his discharge in 1919, we see he has a new address of 15 St Mary Avenue in London.
By 1921, he is living at 1 Cawley Road, London and working as a commercial traveller in the textile industry.
We find him in 1939 living now at 11 Dawson Road in Bexley and working as a manufacturers agent/salesman.
William died in Trowbridge in 1969.
The medal has an original silk ribbon.
