William Victor Williams was born to William and Ellen in Cheltenham in 1887. He enlisted into the Royal Navy in 1905 giving his profession as a labourer.

William married Margaret Glasby in 1910.

Among the many ships William served aboard, he served on HMS Temeraire from November 1911 until July 1916.

Whilst aboard, he was included among other ships to search for the German High Seas Fleet after its Raid on Scarborough in December 1914. They were unsuccessful in their hunt.

He was still aboard the Temeraire in May 1916 at the time of the Battle of Jutland. They were the 15th ship of the line and saw action.

They were to fire 5 salvos with 2 hits on the already crippled SMS Wiesbaden which was eventually to sink. After that, they were to fire 7 salvos on SMS Derfflinger but missed. She was to engage again later in the battle but to no effect.  She received no damage and fired a total of 72 twelve-inch shells (all high explosive) and 50 shells from her four-inch guns during the battle.

He earned his LSGC medal in 1921 whilst with HMS Vivid.

He was to retire in 1927.

In 1939, we find William and his family living at 3 Sandford Terrace, Keynsham Road in Cheltenham and he is working as a dairy engineer.

He was to re-enlist into service in November 1939. For most of his WWII service he was based at HMS Cabbala. Cabbala was a landbased coding school housed in the requisitioned Tortworth Court in Gloucestershire.

He was to serve until November 1944 during which time he earned his three WWII medals.

William died in 1954.

The WWI medals and LSGC are swing mounted as worn on a clasp. The LSGC ribbon is threadbare and has detached from the clasp. The WWII medal are loose.

All medals have original silk ribbons.
