Henry Squirrell was 20 year old and working as a labourer when he enlisted in 1886. He had previous service with the 3rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He was born in 1866 in Kensington.

His service papers are littered with him being tried and confined, spending over 200 days imprisoned for the crimes of desertion.

He was sent to India in December 1887 and remained there until November 1890. He served in the Hazara Campaign in 1888.

He was entitled to the 1854 India General Service Medal with Hazara 1888 clasp but this was forfeited by sentence of court martial.

He was discharged with ignominy in Portsmouth in 1890.
His character is noted as being very bad.

In 1865 he was sentenced to 4 months hard labouer at Wormwood Scrubs for larceny & receiving.
In 1895 he was sentenced this time for 14 months back at Wormwood Scrubs.
