Correctly named 14884 Pte B McCartney York R
Bernard was born in 1882 to Patrick and Catherine.
A coal miner along with his father and they had both worked at Londonderry Colliery.
An address found for him is 32 California Street, New Seaham.
He went overseas to France in August 1915 earning his 1915 Trio.
He served with the 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment as well as the 7th and 12th Battalions but was with the 8th Bn when he was awarded his Military Medal.
It is gazetted on the 8th of December 1916.
His Military Medal is being held in the Museums Victoria Collections in A
We managed to find an online clip from the Newcastle Daily Chronicle dated 17/11/1916, please see the pictures.
He also served in the West Riding Regiment with the service number 34486, the 5th Battalion.
We see in 1921, he is out of work from the Londonderry Colliery Ltd.
In 1939, we find him living with presumably his son, Austin at 89 Malvern Crescent, Seaham where it is also noted that he is still a miner and in the Army Reserve with the 5th West Riding Regiment.
The medal has an original silk ribbon although a bit dirty.
