An interesting 1915 star on replacement ribbon named to.

William was born c1878 at Handforth, Stockport,  Cheshire.

He enlisted at Manchester into the royal marine artillery 15th April 1898.

According to his record he served in the boxer rebellion campaign being awarded the China 1900 medal .

He was awarded his long service good conduct medal 28th May 1913 .

He served on various ships and bases during his service but by far the most important was Hms ocean a pre Dreadnought battleship and was onboard when she was hit by a shell then hit a mine during the Dardanelles / gallipoli campaign.

She sank in morto Bay 18th March 1915 .

On Williams records it notes his China and lsgc medals were lost at sea and were replaced on 10th September 1915 .

He was eventually discharged due to a malignant obstruction.
