The clasp is confirmed in rolls.
There is evidence of contact marks from the Star on the Egypt Medal.
In 1884 the 2nd.Battalion, Essex Regiment, nicknamed ‘The Pompadours’, formed part of the two expeditions under the command of Sir Garnet Wolseley, for the relief of General Gordon at Khartoum. The River Column, accompanied by Wolseley, struggled up the Nile, and reached Korti on 26 December 1884, while the Desert Column operated from Suakin. At Korti Major-General Sir Herbert Stewart was ordered to take the Camel Corps and Naval Brigade and cross the desert to Metemmeh. The 2nd. Essex Regiment formed part of the Mounted Infantry Camel Regiment.
