Correctly named K4677 A Varney ASPO HMS Centurion

Born in Erith, Kent, in 1891, Albert Varney enlisted in the Royal Navy in March 1909 (initially under service number J2168, later K4677 as a Stoker).

He is seen in 1901 living with his parent Harry & Annie at 1 Coleman Road, Belvedere, Kent.

In May 1911, Varney’s quick thinking and bravery were officially recognized when he saved a woman and child from drowning in the Newbury Canal. For this selfless act of heroism, he was awarded a prestigious Testimonial on Vellum from the Royal Humane Society.

He married Alice Cooke in 1914.

A Career of Elite Service

World War I: Varney served throughout the entirety of the Great War, seeing service aboard major vessels including the King George V-class dreadnought battleship HMS Centurion. For his wartime service, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star Trio.

Interwar & LSGC: Continuing his career post-war, Varney risen to Leading Stoker by 1921. In 1924, he was awarded his Naval Long Service and Good Conduct (LSGC) Medal.

WWII & The Fleet Reserve: After being shore-pensioned in March 1931, he immediately joined the Royal Fleet Reserve (RFR). When WWII broke out, Varney was recalled, serving on the Home Front for the duration of the war until his release to the reserves in July 1945.

Albert died in 1975.
