John Hughes was born at peshawar, punjab ,India 18th June 1880 a blacksmiths striker by occupation.
He joined the Royal Navy 26th September 1902.
Served on various ships .
Served on Hms laforey a L class destroyer 24th March 1914 until 19th September 1915 and 20th March 1916 until 31st January 1917 so would have took part in battle off noordhinder Bank where several destroyers sank two German torpedo boats and also during the battle of jutland where she with others escorted the damaged hms Marlborough back to home after the battle .
