Robert was born 10th February 1900 at poplar , London.

A camera repairer by occupation he enlisted in the Royal Navy 12th February 1918 .

He served aboard Hms Supurb 22nd June 1918 and 31st May 1919 .

During which time Hms Superb was made the flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet with Vice Admiral Sir Somerset Gough Calthorpe as flag officer .

She was sent to the ottoman capital of Constantinople to take part in the Armistice of mudros .

Then after supplying a crew for a Russian destroyer ( previously captured by the Germans and handed over to Hms Superb after the November 11th armistice. ).

She then proceeded to odessa in Russia to see the situation of the civil war .
