He was a member of 2nd battalion mess for 15 years and the last pre war member to leave it ,he initally served with 1st Battalion then joined the 2nd Battalion in India pre ww1 ,severely wounded at Ypres whist acting company serjeant major ,despite his wound not being fully healed he returned to France in July 1918 with the 7th battalion, in 1920 he was promoted to rsm of 2nd battalion then at curragh camp .
