Alfred Leslie Cutland was born in 1898 to Elizabeth and Richard. Alfreds papers survive so we can see he was working as clerk when he enlisted in March 1917.

He enlisted into the 18th Training Battalion but later moved to the 16th Bn. He again moved, this time to the 5th Bn Rifle Brigade in October 1917. He was sent overseas to France in April 1918. He was de-mobbed from service in March 1920.

When he enlisted, his address is given as 30 Yalding Road, Bermondsey. He is still living here with his family in 1921 where it is recorded he is again a clerk working for Bullard Kings Co Ltd, ship owners. He met Doris Gaskill and they married in 1928 and Alfred is noted as now living at 336 Fort Road.

By 1939, Alfred and Dirs are living at 58 Foxbury Road, Bromley in the home of Doris’s parents. Alfred now is seen to be working as a Mercantile Marine clerk.

Alfred died in 1958.
