Irving was born to John and Jane in Hunslet, Leeds in 1892.

We see the family in 1911 living at 1 Mafeking Mount, Beeston, Leeds. His father was a foreman machine fitter in the woodworking industry.

When he enlisted in December 1915, he was living now at 5 Prospect Place in Horsforth, Leeds and working as a clerk in an estate office.

He served in France from April 19 with the 2/8Bn Leeds Rifles and we find a wound report for him in June 1918. Further investigation uncovers Irving was digging trenches when earth collapsed on top of him and crushed his leg. He was to suffer with synovitis from this. the War Diaries show they were in the area of Famerchon around this time.

He was sent back to the UK to recover and on his return was to serve with 6Bn and we see he is again injured in June 1918.

He was re-numbered 306926.

After his discharge, he married Lily Walker in 1922.

We find Irving and Lily at ‘Chez Nous’ Tinshill Lane in Leeds in 1939 and Irving is working again as a clerk for an estate agents.

Irving died in 1985.

The medals both have original silk ribbons.
