Charles Stenson was born in Hale, Farnham where his mother’s family lived. His father, James, had lived in the area since the age of 5 lodging with the Stevens family and he is variously described as boarder or adopted son. His parents, Amy and James, married in 1896. In both the 1901 and 1911 census records, Charles is living with his grandparents(although in one record he is described as their nephew). On CWGC records, Charles’ father is described as deceased but it has not been possible to find records of his death. In 1914, Amy, his mother, married again, this time to Edward E Adams. Charles’ half siblings had been born in the years preceding their marriage when Edward and Amy lived in Rose Cottage, Guildford Road, Lightwater. By the time of Charles’ death in 1918, his mother, as Mrs Adams, was living in Moirs Cottage, Updown Hill, Windlesham. The Rev A J Hutton writes of Charles in Windlesham Roll of Honour ‘Charles Stenson was born on 23rd May 1898 and enlisted at the end of 1915 before he was 18 years of age. He was claimed back on account of his age. He enlisted for a second on 1st February 1917 and went into training at Southend and from there to Dover. He came home for four days before leaving for France. He joined up in the 8th Battalion of the East Kent’s and went to France on 20th June 1917.
