Arthur basil Chaplin was born at Halstead, Essex c1887 ,a bricklayer by occupation who joined the Essex regiment aged 18 years 24th October 1905 .

He was a member of the 4th militia battalion Essex regiment on enlistment.

He saw service in Malta, India and home service pre war .

Arthur entered France 22nd August 1914 and was wounded by gunshot wounds to right arm and forehead on 26th August 1914 being sent home to Netley hospital.

He was mentioned in the times list of casualties 14th September 1914.

An address given 2 Chapel terrace, Halstead.

Found to now be profoundly deaf he was discharged as permanently medically unfit on 14th December 1914 and was later awarded a Silver War Badge whereabouts unknown.

There is a basil Arthur Chaplin noted on 1921 census who was born at Halstead who was living at 7 Churchfield Road, Walton on naze ,Essex ,a railway goods porter for great Eastern Railway.

Number on bwm I faint due to contact with star ,some polishing to 1914 in centre of star as pictured .
