Correctly named 5093 Pte J Durbin Somerset Lt Inf
Albert John Durbin was born to Albert and Emma in Nailsea, Somerset in 1882.
He enlisted aged 17 into the 4th Bn Somerset Light Infantry. His trade upon enlisting is noted as that of a labourer.
An address found for him is 3 Ivy Terrace, Parsons Street, Bedminster.
The 4th (2nd Somerset Militia) Battalion was embodied in December 1899, and 415 officers and men embarked in the SS Kildonan Castle in early March 1900 for service in South Africa.
Albert died in service on the 26th of October 1901 due to tubercale on the lung.
He is buried in East London, Buffalo City, Metropolitan Municipality, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
He is entitled to a Kings South Africa and the Cape Colony clasp is confirmed on rolls.
The medal has a modern replacement ribbon.
