Correctly named S26734 Pte SEC Mess Camerons

Samuel Edward Chaddock Mess was born in Kinning Park, Glasgow to James & Hannah in 1889.

He married Caroline Garner in 1915.

Enlisting into the 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders, he saw service as well as 3594 in the Lovat Scouts.
We find a wound report for him dated 6/9/1917 whilst with the Seaforth Highlander.

Eventually transferring to the 8th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders with a new service number S/40646 where he was to be promoted to Lance Corporal. He was in C company, 12th Platoon.

The 8th Seaforths were involved in the Battle of the Tardenois during the 1918 campaign. This battle was part of the larger conflict in the Marne area, where the British faced heavy resistance from the German forces. The battalion’s actions during this period are documented in various war diaries and records, reflecting their experiences and challenges in the field.

He has a presumed date of death noted as the 28th of July 1918.

He is buried at Rapeirie British Cemetery, Villemontoire.
