Crimea Medal with Sebastopol clasp is unnamed
Turkish Crimea Medal, Sardinian issue, named Serjt J Drummond 4th Dn Gds
The regiment was deployed to the Peninsula in 1811 and fought under General Sir John Slade at the Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo in January 1812 during the Peninsular War. It also took part in the charge of the Heavy Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava in October 1854 during the Crimean War.
Soldiers who were present at the Charge of the Heavy Brigade were also entitled to the Balaklava clasp. His record confirms these to be his full entitlement.
Searching through the rolls for the IVth Dragoon Guards, we find John as a Corporal wiith the service number 1231.
John was born c1833 in Courie, Perth to John and Margery. We found him in the 1840s Census.
He was a working draper when he enlisted in Edinburgh in 1854.
Records show him to have earned promotion upto Sergeant but then get busted as he was tried and imprisoned between November 1861 and January 1862.
He eventually made his way back up to Sergeant by the time he was discharged in 1875.
